Review 841: Owner, Castello Gavorrano

Review by MelissaC from US

1bed/1bath apartment in Gavorrano, Tuscany West

September 2003, 2 weeks

Il Castello has three apartments in a historic house in the middle of the small town Gavorrano. Gavorrano has about 5,000 inhabitants and is medieval in character, with winding streets and old walls. The town is located on a hill. From the apartment garden you have a beautiful view of the hilly landscape and the ocean. The sea is only 20 miles away. Lots of interesting sights within 30 mile radius.

Nearby Amenities

A car is necessary. Post office, grocery store, and gas station are located at the bottom of the hill. Restaurants are within walking distance.

The House/Apartment

The building is historical. The garden has a historcan fountain as well. All of the apartments were beautifully renovated. We stayed in apartment C. The garden is well kept and has a beautiful view. We often breakfasted there or spent time reading in the beach chairs. The kitchen has a gas stove/oven and everything you might need in the way of utensils. Everything was great.

The garden was definately a highlight of this rental! We spent hours there. Just beautiful!

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in good shape and mostly antique, or at least fitting for this medieval apartment. Everything was pretty clean, if you are not too picky. I think the last visitors before us left a month earlier, so the dishes, etc. needed a washing due to dust.

The double bed is in a stone casing and looks quite medieval! The bedroom is rustic and suited us just fine, although apartment C is basement level and passers-by can be distinctly heard through the bedroom window. The bathroom is modern with bidet and shower.

The kitchen was well equipped and usable. The dining table is antique and really adds to the atmosphere.

Problems or Bonuses

We were surprised that the apartment was located "in the basement". But it didn't affect the quality of our stay there. The other two aparments are entirely above ground and modern in style. The German owners were also there when we were, but they didn't really volunteer any extra information. However, they were friendly if asked.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owners are very professional and give you a great amount of information in advance.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We definately recommend this rental to others who are looking to experience life in a small, medieval tuscan town.

Things to do in this area

Ocean 15-20 miles away with several excellent beaches. Many Etruscan sites. Many quaint medieval towns nearby. Massa Marittima is a good tip for a night out on the town with excellent restaurants and shopping! (Just 30 miles away)
