2bed/2bath apartment on an estate near Montefollonico, Tuscany South

May 22 - 29, 2004, 7 days

Apartment "La Mezzaluna" is located on a small organic farm engaged in the production of red wine and olive oil. It is within easy walking distance of the small hilltown of Montefollonico, and has one of the most beautiful views accross the valley to the neighboring city of Montepulciano on the distant hill about 5 miles away. Even Mt. Cetona is visible towering in the distane. The apartment, while attached to the farm, is completely private including its own large terrace.

Nearby Amenities

Walking into Montefollonico you will find 2 grocery stores, a bank, post office, and gelato bar. In addition to the two well known and reviewed restaurants of La Chiusa and La Costa, there are 2 small very good resaurants right by the town's main gate.

The House/Apartment

The apartment was simply the nicest, cleanest, and most comfortable one we have found so far. It was renovated just over five years ago by the charming British owners, Robert and Elfride Vaughan, who moved over from England to work the farm. They did a wonderful job of preserving the old and adding the new to modernize this apartment yet leave much of the old stone, wood, and tiles.

The apartment, the only one on the farm, has its own private covererd terrace off the kitchen with its gorgeous panoramic view. The terrace is lined with beautiful flowers and plants and has seating for 4 at a comfortable outdoor dining table as well as 4 loungers that can be moved under the sun or shade.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

All the furniture is relatively new and in excellent shape. There is a sleep sofa in the living room that could accommodate an extra child or two, but probably not great for extra adults. The living room seats 5 comfortably. We were two adult couples staying there, and the place was perfect. But it would also be perfect for a family of 5 or even 6 as there is also an extra single bed in one of the two bedrooms. Also, you will not find a cleaner apartment.

There are 2 bedrooms, one with a queen bed and a single, and one with another queen bed. All the beds are very comfortable. The two bathrooms, one with shower and one with shower and tub, are very large and completely modern. The showers are excellent with plenty of hot, and I mean "hot" water.

The kitchen is a combination cooking and dining area with a large table for 6 right next to a large wall of glass at one end opening out to the terrace and gorgeous view. All the appliances are modern and everything is there for cooking. The owners left us a welcome package including their own wine, virgin olive oil, homemade jam, and 10 fresh eggs.

Problems or Bonuses

Only good surprises!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked the property directly with the owner through the rent-from-owner website www.holiday-rentals.com (property #6131). It is also listed on www.villarama.com (property #2949). You can also e-mail the owners directly at reniella@libero.it.

The two young British owners, Robert and Elfride, are very helpful, naturally speak English, and will do just about anything to ensure you have a great time. I know they have had families there in the fall that have enjoyed joining them in the olive picking and pressing process. Their present rates vary between 425 euros and 625 euros/week depending on the season. Splitting that with our two couples was a great deal.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We will definitely return as have many of their previous guests, whose praise is echoed more than once through their guestbook.

Also, a car is really necessary as you will want to visit many of the great hill towns and restaurants of southern Tuscany and even Umbria.

Things to do in this area

There are so many great restaurants, towns, sites, and wineries within an hour's drive that I can't begin to mention them, but all that information is available on our SlowTrav website.
