Review 93: Internet Villas, La Novillina

Review by Carol from Alabama

5bed/3bath villa near Tavernelle, Tuscany Chianti

April 2001, 1 week

A group of four couples stayed in a villa in Fiano, Tuscany for the week of April 21-28, 2001. The villa was La Novillina and it was rented through italianvillas.com. About 10 months ago I started researching agencies and gathering information. This was a perfect match for our group. I did 89% of the booking on line but if I ever had a question and needed to talk to someone in person, I'd call their 800 number and they were very helpful.

The 12th century villa was located outside Certaldo about 16 miles from Florence. Driving time to Florence was about 45-60 min. due to the heavy traffic the closer you got to the city. Our villa had 3 bathrooms and 5 bedrooms. Two of the baths were within a bedroom suite. One bath had both shower & tub and a double vanity, and the others had either a shower or a tub. The kitchen was very large with lots of dishes. Large gas stove and moderate refrigerator. It had a dishwasher but we usually washed out dishes. The only thing I thought it needed was larger glasses. One of the living areas had a fireplace and they provided wood for it. There was a stereo system and couple of CDs. The other large den was on the ground floor off a bedroom and a TV was there. A washing machine was provided but no dryer only clotheslines. One draw back was it took 1hr 45min. to wash a load of clothes.

The setting was lovely - in the middle of an olive grove. I would think in June it would be more spectacular because there were rose bushes everywhere. The purple irises were in bloom and pots of lemon & oranges trees bearing fruit were on the patio. There was an artichoke patch with artichokes ripening. A swimming pool was available but the weather was much too cool to have a pool party.

The caretaker met us there and explained everything about the house and came back the day we left to return our deposit less the cleaning fee and utilities. The deposit was $500, cleaning was $150 and utilities were about $150.

Our location was close enough to do day trips to San Gimignano, Lucca, Pisa, and Siena. The villa couldn't be in a nicer location!

Note from SlowTrav: As of January 2007, Internet Villas no longer represents properties. They are transferring listings; you may view properties at Villa Escapes. Also this same house is also listed with Italian Itineraries (called Podere Luisa) and reviewed by Amy from MA - Review 116.
