Review 94: TuscanHouse, Il Torrino
1bed/2bath tower in Montichiello, Tuscany South
Mid March, 2001, ten day stay in a three week vacation
Il Torrino (the Tower) from TuscanHouse, near Montepulciano, in Monticchello. Lots of neat places near by. A good place to have as a base of operations.
It is a tower in the walls of a small town. Town has two restaurants, grocery & bar, an easy hike to all. Nice hike around the walls. Killer views, especially from Il Torrino. Very quiet. The little town and the surrounding area are wonderful.
Four floors, one room on each floor. The higher you go the more room you have. Basement - Laundry, bathroom and shower. Exit to lower terrace and outdoor tub. First floor - Kitchen and eating area - entrance and upper terrace which has bench and table. Second floor - Living room - internal and external stairway to first floor or terrace. Third floor - Bedroom, bathroom with tub and shower. It is very near other buildings, yet very private. The two terrace areas face out from the walls, as do windows from the tower. The outside areas are lovely to sit in. Because of its extreme height it can be a little windy.
This property is more like a house than an apartment, but really is neither. It is a tower!!
The furniture was in good shape and most generally comfortable. The whole place was very clean.
Best room in the place. Windows on four sides, a loft with a skylight that opens, lots of light. Extremely high with great views. Great bed. Bathroom very roomy with a good shower. Table and chairs to work at.
Kitchen is usable. Wendy felt that it was a "bachelors" kitchen, very functional but not for cooking lots of big meals. Table is only comfortable for three, but open the door and you have a nice outdoor eating area for more. We did cook a lot of meals there without any problems. We liked the property so much that it was hard for us to leave!
Problems or Bonuses
Lots of stairs! This is not a place for small kids or people who don't want to hike stairs. No parking right at the place, mostly because it is on the side of a cliff. Must park 50 yds away in town. Parking easy to find and access good.
This is a place to relax. People in town are very friendly; the woman at the restaurant near the town entrance spoke excellent English and was very friendly. It was a fun place to stop in for a coffee or a very good and reasonable dinner etc. The small bar near the entrance was also a real treat with friendly people.
The absolute best bonus was the owner of the property. He is a very charismatic sort who was the consummate host. He met us at the gate and answered questions and then told us where he could be found if we needed anything. He made himself available but not intrusive. He speaks excellent English and ended up introducing us to a lot of people in town, explaining history, taking us for a hike, giving us advice about things to do, etc. We extended our visit and he took care of canceling our paid-in-advance room in Rome and even arranged for a friend in Rome to swing by the hotel to pick up the money which he mailed to us later.
We are planning our trip back!
