apartments on a farm near San Gimignano, Tuscany West

Oct 2003, 3 days

This rental was located about 2 km out of San Gimignano, in a very rural, peaceful setting. It is located at the end of a very drivable dirt road. It was one of the prettiest spots we have ever stayed in - the views are amazing! This is a working farm, surrounded by vineyards and olive trees.

Nearby Amenities

You need to drive to find anything!...but not very far. The best place for grocery shopping is a large supermarket on the main road into Poggibonsi, but there are also smaller markets in the town itself.

The House/Apartment

This is a very old farm that has been nicely restored, and is in very good shape. It is however, done in a very "homey" style, not the "Under the Tuscan Sun" perfection one sees in much of Tuscany. Everything was extremely clean and in perfect working order. There were several other apartments in our building. I don't know precisely how many.

There is a fabulous brand new pool, with a breath taking view of the towers of San Gimignano. The pool is surrounded by nice areas to sit and read or relax, grassy, but not manicured. There are also some nice walking paths.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Furnishings were ample and very comfortable, the apartment was extremely clean. Again, the style is a bit old fashioned, but it felt very cosy and comfortable, like you were in a real house, not a hotel suite.

Very large nice bedroom, with a Sat. TV, the bed was very comfortable, one bathroom (two person apartment) that was large, clean and up to date. Has one of those Italian showers that are not really contained ... just a curtain in the corner, but it worked just fine! Plenty of towels.

This was a great kitchen ... and I love to cook! It was big enough (and well equipped enough) to cook for and serve about 6 to 8 people comfortably! It also has that slightly old fashioned feeling, but everything worked perfectly.

Breakfast is served in a separate building, and is delicious. The breakfast room is large and decorated with huge old maps, which came from the owner's mother's high school in Siena.

Problems or Bonuses

Good surprises:

#1 - the friendliness of Stefano, the owner, and his parents. While Stephano speaks perfect English, he patiently allowed us to practice our Italian (with gentle and helpful corrections :)) He is an interesting, friendly and helpful host.

#2 - the great wine produced on site!

#3 - the views

#4 - the size of the apartment

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Stephano was unable to meet us due to an urgent matter, so his parents did the honors ... they were quite nervous since they do not speak English, and were obviously relieved that we had some basic Italian. They had a small bottle of the farm's olive oil waiting for us, and showed us all around. Very charming people, and we felt very warmly received.

We paid about 80 US dollars a night for the apartment and breakfast, in early Oct, which is considered low season for this property.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would absolutely recommmend this property to those looking for a fairly rural, quiet and homey and friendly spot. Very laid back, nice place to relax after sight seeing all day. It is not for those who are looking for a restaurant on the property (this is none!) or manicured gardens. We had a wonderful stay and would love to go back.

Things to do in this area

I think the San Gimignano area speaks for itself - we really enjoyed the town, in spite of it obvious "tourist-ness", things like parking and traffic were very well managed. The restaurants and shops are great, the museum in the city hall well worth the time. Most of all, the beauty of the area is amazing.
