Dean's Wine and Food Notes
Dean Gold (Dean)
Dean Gold and Kay Zimmerman own Dino, an Italian restaurant in Washington D.C. Dean writes seasonal Wine and Food articles.
Wine and Food Notes
Where are all the tomatoes?: Fresh tomatoes and mozzarella in summer, squash dishes for fall. Wines on the menu change from lighter to heavier to match the dishes and the season.
Italian Wine Notes
Buying Wine in Italy: How to carry back your wine, wine buying strategies.
Italy - Amarone: Amarone is a shorthand version of the actual DOC (the legal name of the wine) of the wine which is Reciotto di Valpolicella.
Italy - Piemonte Wines: The whole area of Piemonte would be too large a topic for a single page. So I will concentrate on the best know fine wine area and that is the area surrounding Alba, home to Barolo and Barbaresco and white truffles.
Italy - Wines of the North / Northeast: This is a not at all comprehensive tour through some of my favorite wine areas: Trentino, Alto Adige and Friuli Giulla Venezia.
Italy - Impressions of Brunello: Our visit to the vineyards of Brunello was far too short (and this piece may be far too long). But my understanding of the wines made in this very special spot was greatly enhanced.
Other Countries Wine Notes
Portugal - Port: Port, properly called Porto, is produced by "Houses". There are two large syndicates which own most of the great port houses. It is produced in steep vineyards on the Douro River in Portugal.
Dean is a big lover of Italy, having gone at least once every year since his first trip in 1996. Given a long background in the wine industry, he has many friends in that business and his travels have tended towards their home bases in Toscana. He has traveled to Roma and Venezia as well as explored Cagli in Marche, the Emilia-Romagna and the Peninsole Sorrentina. He hopes to travel soon to Friuli, Trentino and Piemonte to visit old friends and meet new ones.
Dean began in the wine business at age 16 as a collector and started working for Wally's Wines and Spirits in Los Angeles at age 20. He spent his student loan money in college and grad school on wine collecting and building up a assortment of cooking equipment (most of which he still uses today).
Dean is married to the long suffering Kay, who has actually put up with his oddities for almost 20 years. Dean and Kay are devoted to the Slow Travel philosophy. They feel guilty if they stay somewhere for such a short stay as 3 or 4 days (but will do so if time restraints force them to). Their traveling philosophy is that "You can only be late if you have somewhere to go to" and "If you're lost, you're having an adventure".
