The Athens Gate is a fairly modern hotel in a good location to visit the Acropolis, the new Acropolis Museum, and the Plaka. From our room facing Syngrou Avenue, we had a great view of the Temple of Zeus. Our friends had a room facing the opposite direction which gave them a great view of the Acropolis. More great views were available from the rooftop bar and restaurant, where breakfast was served. We were there for Saturday and Sunday nights and paid €195 a night for a Superior Double Room (Queen bed). Our room was a good size and was comfortable and functional. We had a small balcony facing out onto Syngrou Avenue, which is a fairly busy street. There was some traffic noise all night long, but it did not affect my sleep. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was also a decent size with a rather large walk-in shower. However, there were no electricity outlets in the bathroom, which meant my wife had to stand in the hallway facing the wardrobe mirror to use the blow dryer they supplied and her curling iron. The breakfast buffet was substantial and served in a great setting. It included fried and scrambled eggs, bacon, cereals, breads, pastries, yogurt, olives, juices and coffee. Dinner was served later in the day, but we did not eat there. We did have after-dinner drinks one night in the bar. The new Acropolis Museum is very well done and worth a visit. It is virtually around the corner from the Athens Gate, a walk of only 100 meters. The entrance to the south slope of the Acropolis is just across the street from the Museum. Equally close is the touristy Plaka district with shops and restaurants. In sum, it was a comfortable, functional hotel in a good location, but it didn’t have a lot of character and charm. There was a lot to like at the Athens Gate Hotel. First, the location beneath the Acropolis Hill, very close to the Acropolis Museum, was great. The Acropolis is 500 meters away. You could see the Parthenon well lit in the morning sun and lit beautifully in the evening from their rooftop terrace. The well lit Temple of Olympian Zeus is across the street. The view of Athens is great, and you can see as far as the sea. The Plaka area, which was enjoyed, was right out the back door. The Syntagma Square area is an easy walk away. The rooftop terrace was wonderful. There are a few hotels in that neighborhood that had them. The view was amazing, for drinks in the evening, and for an included excellent and bounteous breakfast buffet in the morning. The rooftop terrace was comfortable and stylish, and provides a sheltered area with glass as an option for bad weather. There is a restaurant up there, but we did not make use of it. The style is contemporary and clean. This hotel looks as though it were decorated recently, and shows no wear and tear. The desk was helpful and friendly. Our choice of the the Athens Gate Hotel enhanced our stay in Athens in September 2010. Later in our journey, we stayed in an Athens budget hotel (the Pan Hotel) and the contrast was huge. The extra money spent at the Athens Gate was well worth it. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
