Jerusalem: Bayit V'Gan Guest House

Run away unless you enjoy grotty bathrooms, soiled blankets, streams of teenagers, and a remote location. Cheap and cheerless.

Sadly, I was not in charge of booking inexpensive hotel accommodations for my teacher's trip to Jerusalem. This "guest house" is more of a badly run youth hostel. It's situated in the outskirts, only close to Yad Vashem and Mt Hertzel.

The rooms were dirty, as were the common areas. I returned the stained blanket I found on my bed to the front desk, and it took hours before a clean one was delivered. The heat was not turned on, even though the weather dipped to 40 at night and hallway windows were continually opened by hotel staff. It seems to be largely booked by teen tour groups and units of young army kids studying in Jerusalem.

The ballroom is the site of religious weddings, which play loud music until midnight (although it is tremendous fun to glimpse the festivities from the hall on the way to the elevator). Food is terrible, and there's no brewed coffee in the morning--just Nescafe.

You can do better in Jerusalem.
