3 stars in the desert...and two choices of hotels.

In advance, we'd booked a room at Crowne Plaza, then after the wonderful stay at the Movenpick at the dead sea we changed it to the Movenpick Petra. After checking into the Movenpick Petra, we were given one of the worst rooms that they had (even though the hotel was practically empty) with a view of the parking garage (though it is a nice hotel).

I called the Crowne Plaza up the street to make sure that they were not going to charge our credit card for the cancellation. In typical Arabic bargaining style, the manager started to offer me things to stay in his hotel instead like free breakfast and free dinner and Jordanian rate (about Ä20 less than the Movenpick) 60 dollars a night and the topper, room with a full valley view of Petra. So we checked out of the Movenpick after being there for ten minutes and paid for my one phone call and walked up the hill. I am glad that we did!

The Crowne Plaza was nice for just a 3 star, the buffet dinner was fantastic and the staff pleasant and even let us check out late. We walked down to the entrance of Petra, about 100 meters from the hotel door and spent 5 hours hiking around the hills and taking in the Red Rose Carved City. We hired a horse to take us in and took a carriage on the way out. If you are there in the dead of summer it best to go early in the morning to beat the heat.

It's all about bargaining so donít buy anything at starting price! That's all part of the fun. The hotel let us check out at 3pm so we had time to shower and change before heading down to Aqaba. The old guy selling expensive antiques next to the hotel set up a taxi for us at a decent rate (since we had shopped around prices we knew what to expect).
