Monteverde: Hotel Las Orquideas

Reviewed by: Wendy J from GA, review #1532

When: June 2006

I would love to go back and visit the area again and, if I get back I will definitely stay here again!

On the outskirts of Monteverde. Wonderful views of several waterfalls, the cloud forest and in the distance, the Pacific Ocean! Directly across the street was a horse ranch; we went out riding one day with them and it was wonderful!

The location was perfect; just enough outside of town to be away from any noise on the weekends (though it's a quite town) but close enough to walk to everything - restaurants, two grocery stores, shopping, buses to activities (though when the owner set our activities up, they picked us up at the door), and shopping!

The rooms were VERY clean and comfortable. Oversized showers with an abundance of hot water (if you've ever been to Costa Rica you would really appreciate this!) There is a full common kitchen with a refrigerator and you have the choice of having the hotel fix you breakfast or dinner or purchasing your own groceries and using the common kitchen!

There is also a common seating area with a TV (which the kids enjoyed after a week with out TV!), a book exchange library, tourist books and a complete notebook with area attractions, tours etc.

They have a full deck and viewing platform! I've already described the views but you would have to see them to believe how incredible they were!

The owners and thier housekeeper were incredible! They let us use their computer so we had Internet access, told us the things they would recommend we do, told us about the area and history and even drove us up to their coffee plantation and gave us a tour. They lived in the US for a number of years and both spoke excellent English (which helped me as my Spanish is poor at best) and were just delightful to spend time with!

Things to do in this area include the Cloud Forest and several other forests and national parks, zip lines, hanging bridges, horseback riding, insect museum, frog and snake museum (don't know if museum is the right word---they are alive!), charming town with great restaurants and very nice people!
