Playa del Carmen: Hotel Playa Maya

(Quintana Roo)

Reviewed by: TroisChiens from VA, review #1744

When: December 2006

Lovely, small, beachfront hotel in the heart of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.

I loved this hotel! It's a small, well-kept, boutique-type hotel that sits right on the beach in the heart of Playa Del Carmen only a block away from all the restaurants, stores, and happenings on 5th avenue.

The prices were very reasonable for such a nice beachfront location; $130 for a deluxe terrace room w/ hammock. It is a small hotel, with I would guess around 20 rooms or so. This is not a luxury hotel nor does it pretend to be, but it is a great little hotel that offers clean and simply furnished rooms, a good restaurant, and a fabulous beachfront location with all the needed beachfront services.

Some may not like that you have go through a little bit of sand from the street to access the hotel entrance, but we didn't think it was a big deal because someone was called to take our bags for us.

Although the rooms are nothing fancy, they are quite roomy, very clean, and have AC. A small refrigerator that gets ice cold is in each room ... a large bottled water, a couple each of sodas & beers, and two chocolates are provided complimentary at the start of your stay, which I thought was a very nice touch. No filtration system at the hotel so you can't drink the water; we bought more bottled water to brush our teeth in as well. No big deal, we had expected this while in Mexico.

A computer with internet access is available to guests and I think that they have wireless access if you bring a laptop.

Playa Maya has a small restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch daily. A continental breakfast is part of the rate, which includes choices for toast, fresh OJ, fresh fruit, hotcakes, and even eggs. Breakfast is great, but their lunch is awesome! Great guacamole, shrimp tacos, guanjillo shrimp, and the best coconut shrimp I have ever had! Another great option included a beer bucket (5) with nachos and freshly made pico de gallo for 12 dollars, served to you either under the restaurant palapa or to your lounge chair on the beach.

There's a small pool at the hotel. Not the size to do any olympic swimming but certainly big enough to go for a cool-off dip or to sun-bathe beside. I believe there's a small jacuzzi nearby as well, although with the beautiful beach we never utilized either. The beach in front of the hotel is really nice and was actually bigger than I initially expected, although its size probably varies according to tides and weather.

Lounge chairs, umbrellas, and towels are provided by the hotel and a staff member is always checking to see if you'd like to order drinks or food. The water was clear and beautiful and we all spent most of our days basking in the sun and swimming in the ocean. What a way to live!

In the end, my group all loved the Playa Maya, so much that we spent most of our time there laying in lounge chairs on the beautiful beach. For its location and offerings, it really is a great value and a wonderful way to spend a vacation. There's no doubt that we'd all return and visit again in a heartbeat!
