When: October 2012

In a nice village above Innsbruck, with lots of opportunities for hiking and skiing and easy access to the autoroute. {4 stars}

This place is more elegant than its name suggests. It is a big hotel, with attractive traditional decor and good service at the reception. We chose it because it had an indoor pool, which sounded just great.

Across the street is an excellent restaurant, the Agidihof. Igls is above Innsbruck, an easy exit from the autoroute that crosses the Brenner Pass. The views up there are spectacular. Igls is laced with hiking trails through high meadows and has everything you would want in an Alpine setting. Igls manages to be well equipped for the needs of skiiers and hikers, without being soulless. There is a wonderful cog railway that links Igls with Innsbruck.

If you like to walk, this is the place. We had been in Igls before, and had stayed at the big old Hotel Batzenhausl (reviewed in 2006). Sporthotel was more expensive and stylish, but the views at the Batzenhausl can't be beat.

Our room was fantastic, and probably more than we needed, but we reveled in the space at a time when we needed that. We had a large living room, a large bedroom, a large bathroom, and copious storage space. In addition to that, there was a long balcony with chairs to enjoy the view. The wallpaper was a little dated, but that was a small thing. The room was tasteful, clean and it was so comfortable. We were only there for one night, just passing through - it would have been perfect for skiiers or hikers who would be there for a week. There was lots of space for storing equipment. Included was an excellent breakfast buffet, including a chef preparing eggs to order.

I used the indoor pool, which was lovely. In better weather, the garden area near the pool would have been so nice. There are spa services available. There is free parking available.
