Dominican Republic: Villa Serena

Las Galeras, Phone: 809.538.0000

Reviewed by: Jimbo from USA, review #920

When: March 2005

Absolutely beautiful and tranquil. Great views, grounds, and a nice restaurant. Very helpful and friendly staff.

We spent three nights at the Villa Serena. It is a lovely spot with well manicured grounds surrounding a pool and a small beach along a rocky coastline. The bay at Las Galeras has a reef that keeps the surf down and there's an island a couple hundred yards off shore you can swim or kayak to.

Each room has a balcony facing the water with wonderful views. Las Galeras is a wonderful quiet village and the Villa Serena is simply a great place to stay.

The restaurant serves three meals per day with very nice food. They'll make special meals upon request (one guest had specially grilled fresh fish while we were there). The place is so tranquil and serene (as the name implies). I can't think of a better place to unwind. The staff is very helpful. They'll arrange for boat trips to Playa Rincon (a 4 km totally unspoiled beach that should not be missed), and cab rides and even book air flights for you. You pay them, and they take care of the rest.

On our trip back to Santo Domingo the staff arranged for a charter flight for us when strikes temporarily caused roads to be blocked between Las Galeras and El Portillo. When it was apparent we'd miss our flight, the cab driver they hired and the hotel staff set up a charter flight from Arroyo Barril that got us back to Santo Domingo earlier with fantastic views of Las Haitses from above. If we had stayed anyplace else, we would have had problems, but Villa Serena took care of us even after we departed.

If you want a place to relax and enjoy the balmy ocean breezes in DR, without the crowds and mediocre food of the all inclusive resorts, Villa Serena cannot be matched.
