Authentic apfelwein pub and restaurant in the Sachsenhausen district of Frankfurt

The specialty here is apfelwein, a hard apple cider with an alcohol content of about 6%.
The restaurant is very popular and was crowded with locals as early as 6PM on a Monday night. The seating is at communal tables, either in various large rooms or one of two gardens. We were there in January however, so we never did see the garden seating in the back. Every table seemed to have a blue and white stone crockery pitcher on the table with apfelwein. Most people poured the cider in their glass, then topped it off with sparkling water to taste.
We were in the mood for traditional German food and we were not disappointed! I had a wiener schnitzel with potatoes and my husband had a very large pork shoulder with sauerkraut. My dish also came with a fresh green salad, very nicely dressed.
We noticed many tables getting glasses of calvados in which floated pieces of macerated pears. We had to try that of course and it made for a great nightcap. The desserts are all made in-house and looked fantastic, but the dinner portions were so large, we sadly passed on dessert.
The service is a little slow, but with the sheer volume of customers, it is not surprising. However the servers were all very pleasant and it was great fun to people watch and drink apfelwein while waiting for our meal.
Total cost for the two of us was €47.
