Directions: In the Plateau district. Upon leaving Au Pied de Cochon, I felt like I had *discovered* something new in the world of cuisine. "They just don't have food like that at home in NYC," I thought. But why not? You know, I'm not sure. I knew that foie gras and duck are very popular in Montreal restaurants. But I had no idea to what extent they'd take it. This restaurant is a virtual temple to this kind of food. But I don't want to give the idea that it's in any way pretentious. On the contrary, the vibe is hip and perhaps a bit on the young side. The maitre d' and wait staff were all very friendly, relaxed, and seem to absolutely love their jobs. And I understand why - the food was top rate from start to finish, there's a nice wine list, and it just feels like everyone is there enjoying themselves. We actually only ordered 3 small plates to share, but that was enough to both get the flavor of the place and to enjoy a few of its delights. The highlight for me was Plogue a Champlain - a layered dish of blini, roasted potato, bacon, foie gras, and maple sauce. VERY rich, and VERY good! We also had a terrific tomato and goat cheese tarte as a foil for the meat. I don't know if a restaurant like this could survive in a place like New York, but it is thriving in Montreal and I'm very happy to have gone. Sorry vegetarians, although you too could make a meal of a couple of dishes on the menu like that tarte, there won't be a lot of choice here for you... Reservations are a must.
