Buenos Aires: El Cuartito

Talchunao 937, Buenos Aires

When: 2006

My first taste of Argentina Pizza.

Directions: It is located in the Barrio Norte District of Buenos Aires.

When I asked about having pizza in Buenos Aires eating here was recommended. I took the D train there, got off the closet station Tribunales and was within walking distance to El Cuartito.

When I walked in El Cuartito, I was surprised in what I saw. The bright lighting, big signs overhead listing all the pizzas, crowded with people and off to my right there the seating was cafeteria style tables and chairs. The walls were richly decorated with soccer memorabilia. But one thing stood out when I entered. It was very noisy with people and when I sat down all the voices I heard around me was in Spanish. That is a good sign. I was eating in a place where the portenos know where good food is served.

After a few minutes sitting at my table, a waiter hands me a menu. The menu is one plastic page in Spanish that lists the pizzas and drinks. It is a long list of the pizzas served here! On the other side of the Spanish menu was one in English. I ordered a medium pizza topped with cheese, ham and olives. The medium pizza was more for two people.

I found the pizza delicious by my New York City pizza standards and very inexpensive. The money I spent at El Cuartito for entire medium pizza with topping would not have covered the cost of two “plain” slices of pizza and a soda back home in New York City.

I loved the atmosphere at El Cuartito and will go back again. It is far from the quiet place I prefer to eat but I found to be superb place for people watching.
