When: 2009

Upscale, classy French cuisine. Moderately expensive.

After a day of hiking in the Parc du Mont-Royal, we descended into the Plateau district looking for.... we weren't sure what - for dinner. After walking around for a bit, we happily landed at Laloux. (Disclosure: we had a Zagat guide to help.)

We weren't quite dressed for haute cuisine, but that didn't matter to the welcoming manager and waitstaff. Since we were there on the early side, we were able to sit down without a reservation, but I'd advise reserving. We opted to spend some money that night - we chose the 5-course tasting menu with wine pairings (at C$85 per person, relatively expensive, but by New York City standards, quite worth it - I'd estimate the same kind of dinner in NY would cost almost double).

One of the most delighful dishes was a salad of shrimp, fennel, orange, cilantro, passion fruit émulsion. Desserts were also terrific. This is a great place for a celebratory night out.
