Québec City: Le Commensal

860, rue St.-Jean, Faubourg St. Jean-Baptiste neighborhood , Phone: 418-647-3733

Reviewed by: David from NY, review #3293

When: 2009

Inexpensive, cafeteria-like vegetarian restaurant. A nice break from the predominant meat menus of the area.

Le Commensal has two branches in Montréal and one in Québec (unless there are more I don't know about). For visitors who need a break from the traditional, meat-laden menus and don't want to spend much, it's the perfect answer.

Set up cafeteria style, you pay by weight. You can also bring your own wine. We went twice and many of the offerings were the same, but there were so many to try, we didn't lack for variety. The quality of the cooking was somewhat hit or miss, although I enjoyed much of what I had. Actually, the colder, salad things satisfied me more than some of the hot (temperature, not spice) curries and cheesey casseroles. Definitely inexpensive and novel. If there was a place like this in my neighborhood in NYC, I'd go.
