This restaurant was recommended by a photographer we met on our travels. He liked the local atmosphere and food.

Hubby and I wandered in for lunch on a Saturday and were not disappointed. At the entrance is the bar where the owner and his family welcomed us, showing us to a table in the back. The atmosphere was that of an underground cantina, posters of Spain on the walls and an open courtyard. We opted for the air conditioned interior.

We had tapas for lunch, brought to us by a friendly, attractive server fluent in English. This seemed to be the norm for people working in the service sectors in Puerto Rico. Four tapas plates were more than enough for our lunch, chorizo sauteed in wine, big juicy mushrooms stuffed with tomato and chicken, garbanzos with shrimp and chorizo, slices of machengo cheese served with freshly sauteed zuchinni and pesto sauce.

We enjoyed the food and service so much, we gladly accepted the invitation to make reservations for the evening Flamenco show. This was held in the courtyard, the performers brought a small wooden platform for a stage. There were 3 female dancers and a male percussionist who augmented the recorded music. I wish I had learned more Spanish so that I could understand the narration. The dancers were very graceful and the dances were varied, showing me that there is a lot more to Flamenco than stomping feet and swishing skirts.

Because we were still digesting our lunch, we opted only for soup, gazpacho for me and lentil for hubby. A giant pitcher of Sangria lasted us for the evening. We were made to feel welcome and there were no raised eyebrows because we did not order a huge dinner. Next time we are in Old San Juan we will be sure to revisit Rosa de Triana.
