When2005, 17 days ReviewWe rented this home for our Christmas/New Year holiday in December 2005. We spoke with the owner and caretaker several times about the home and proximity to the beach. We were traveling with four young children and were looking for easy access to water and a nice "home base". When we got to the home we were shocked. The home was advertised as “completely restored”. It isn't. The kitchen and baths are in a horrible state of disrepair. Cement shower, ancient and rusted fixtures, a cracked kitchen sink, decades old appliances, mildewed sponges, and trash cans accessed by raising the countertop (the painted plywood cabinet). After airing for a full 24 hours, the odor was still unbearable. Restored? If your idea of restored is an "early farmhouse" kitchen, stained rugs, broken tiling, a few older tables (garage sale vintage), a broken cane chair seat at the dining room table, and ripped living room furniture. This is to say nothing of the old paint job (cracked and peeling). And the beach? The house is on the Queens Highway, 2 doors from the liquor store, and across from an 8 foot seawall which goes down to ironshore. (There is sand 1/4 mile down the highway, but it is in the city center. We never saw one single person use this "beach".) The owner told us there was “a small swimming area on the other side of the fence, where her children learned to swim.” The owner now refuses our phone calls and emails. This vacation cost us the price of this rental and an additional $5000 + for alternate housing. (Pineapple Fields was an amazing alternative -- and very nice -- just as advertised.) Renter beware.
