Review 1900: Schoenhouse Apartments, Studio

Review by Yasmoo from Germany

apartments in Berlin, Germany

January 2006, 4 days

In Berlin Mitte, very central and close to everything. Right near the U-bahn station Rosa-Luxembourg-Platz. Sights within walking distance although it was so cold when we were there (with a toddler) that we took public transport. A taxi from Tegel airport cost less than 20 euros, but we took a bus from Alexanderplatz (1 stop away) back to the airport when we left. It was very easy and we could use the day transport ticket that we had already bought.

Nearby Amenities

Restaurants were right next door, a pharmacy was across the road and a grocery store was 2 minutes away on foot. The best thing was a lovely little Italian grocery a couple of doors down from the building, with espresso for 90 cents and a plate of pasta for 3 euro 50.

The House/Apartment

The apartments are in a courtyard, so very quiet with no noise from the street. There were several apartments in the complex, some are bigger with 1 or 2 bedrooms. Our apartment was fitted out nicely, everything was modern and clean.

No outside sitting area in the apartment, there was a general courtyard but not really sure you could sit anywhere. It was too cold when we were there anyway.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was all fine, probably from IKEA, modern and stylish design. Everything was clean, although the floors are wooden and unsealed so I would advise bringing some house shoes or socks to wear around the house or feet might get a bit dirty.

The beds were comfy and mattresses firm. They included a cot for our daughter. The bathroom was modern with a shower over a bath. The hot water was VERY hot and very sensitive, so needed to be handled carefully. Hand soap was in the bathroom, but you need to bring your own soap for the shower. Nice fluffy white towels warmed on a heater in the bathroom.

The kitchen had a microwave and two hot plates, no oven. There was a toaster and a kettle, unusual for German rentls I think, and of course a coffee machine. It was fine to cook in. A new sponge was provided and washing detergent and paper towel.

Problems or Bonuses

No surprises.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency was prompt, I actually booked through first and then dealt directly with the apartments. The person who met us at 10pm on a Friday night was lovely, very welcoming and friendly. He had called a few hours before to check what time we were coming, and he arrived at the apartments at about the same time we did to let us in. He spoke English. The apartment looked just like it had in the pictures, there were no disappointments. We paid 65 euro per night, with a one-off cleaning fee of 45 euro added.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would stay here again and recommend it to my friends.

Things to do in this area

I really enjoyed the area around Hackescher Markt, for nice cafes, restaurants and cute little shops. You could easily walk there from the apartment.
