Review 2193: Owner, Amsterdam Canal Apartment
2bed/1bath apartment in Amsterdam, Netherlands
April 2006, 1 week
The apartment has an excellent location on one of the most charming stretches of the Heregracht, less than a 10 minute walk from the train station so it's easy to take day trips. The canal boats pass by all day but are quiet and fun to watch from the big windows.
There are many restaurants and a grocery store within a few blocks and the Saturday market at Noodermarkt is a great place to stock up if you will be cooking. The Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum are about a mile walk, the Anne Frank House is closer. Most sights are within walking distance, though there is also a good tram system.
The apartment is the second floor of a four-story house built in 1614. The first floor is a lovely classic hall and there are two units above the apartment but we heard no noise from them. You do have to climb one flight of a winding staircase. The apartment was beautifully renovated last year into a light, open space with the living/dining area across the front and a kitchen wall that was well equipped along the back wall. It was quite spacious feeling. The kitchen and bath have all new fixtures combined with interesting antique tiles. One bedroom has a king bed and armoire closet. The other has a trundle bed and regular closet.
The second bedroom opens to a private terrace with table and chairs overlooking the back courtyard.
The furniture and beds were very comfortable and the apartment was spotless. There is a sofa and two easy chairs in the living room and six can sit at the big oval table. There is a built in library wall with stereo and flat screen TV, CD's, and books (many in English and about the local area).
The second bedroom might be more appropriate for children or one adult due to the trundle bed. The bathroom has a separate tub and shower, a washer/dryer and the toilet is in a separate room off the hall.
The kitchen has a dishwasher, gas stove, under counter fridge, microwave, toaster, a Senseo coffeemaker we especially liked and adequate cookware/dishes. We did make breakfast and several dinners there and it was fine, though it was small if you want to do a lot of cooking.
Problems or Bonuses
The owner made a laptop computer available and provided maps. A bonus was the view of different gable neck, 400 year old leaning buildings across the canal. Note that the house next door is being renovated so you should check with the owner if it is completed or if to expect noise. It was not an issue while we were there.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The owner, Steven, is very thoughtful, speaks excellent English and was most helpful providing directions for day trips to Keukenhof etc. The upstairs tenant met us, showed us how everything worked and was on hand for any questions. We paid 1100 euros for the week (for three people), which included tax and cleaning.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would love to stay here again as it was very convenient, comfortable and relaxing. I can totally recommend this rental.
Things to do in this area
The apartment is on the edge of the Jordan district, which has many cafes, bars and boutiques. There were deli's, bakeries and cheese stores on Haarlemerstraat within several blocks.
