Cottages near Shelburne Nova Scotia, Canada

When

August 2006, 5 days

Location

Boulder Cove Cottages is a small operation, with five cottages situated a large wooded site on the shores of a sheltered bay on the north Atlantic, just off the famous Lighthouse Route. The cottages are well-separated from each other, distinct in style and very personal. The lane-way down to Boulder Cove is an adventure in itself, twisting as it does down a steep incline through the woods and around numerous large (you guessed it) boulders. Our hosts were very pleasant and friendly, but left us to enjoy our privacy and the beauty of the land. There was a paddle boat, canoes, and various amusements for smaller children, as well as easy access to a long distance walking trail to Shelburne (about 10 km, I would guess).

Nearby Amenities

We did not walk to Shelburne, though an ambitious walker or one with more time to stay could do so. Its probably about 10 km though, and roughly a 5-10 minute drive along a scenic route. Shelburne is a beautiful historic town with many shops, amenities and restaurants. The cottages are along the Lighthouse route and nothing is very far away. We did day trips out from Boulder Cove to many places easily - we went birding, hiking, swimming and beach combing there are numerous beautiful and empty sand beaches in the area)as well as shopping, dining out and sight-seeing.

The House/Apartment

The cottage itself was spacious, well-equipped, nicely decorated and in excellent shape. They appear to be relatively new - maybe built sometime around 2000. There were five cottages in all, but they were quite far apart and the area was densely covered in trees, so there was certainly no sense of being in a complex of like cottages, nor of having to share your space. Our view from the deck looked out over the bay and without craning our necks we could not see any of the other cottages.

Our cottage was a three bedroom, with a single large bathroom. Each bedroom had a double or queen bed, dresser, closet and bedside tables with lamps. The bathroom had a large whirlpool bath, separate shower stall and the usual amenities. There was a fireplace in the living room and patio doors leading to a large wrap-around deck on which stood a gas BBQ. The living room was comfortably furnished with couch, love seat and rocking chair, a TV & VCR, coffee table and a supply of books and boardgames. The kitchen was likewise well stocked with fridge, full stove, coffee maker, toaster, kettle, and all cookware, flatware and dishes a family could need. A nice touch was a binder of travel & tourist information for the area, including menus and maps for all the restaurants in the nearby village of Shelburne.

Garden

Yes. See earlier comments about view from deck. There was no pool, though there was a dock, paddle boat and canoes. There were comfortable deck chairs on the deck and scattered throughout the wooded site to provide comfortable seating in a scenic setting.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Everything in excellent shape, very clean and well-cared for.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The beds were a little hard for my liking but did not interfere with sleep. There was lots of bedding and towels for everyone.

Kitchen

As good as anyone would need I think. Full kitchen, with lots of cooking and eating supplies, many small appliances, a gas BBQ. A full eat-in kitchen with table and six chairs.

Problems or Bonuses

The setting was a very good surprise. Absolutely lovely.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We dealt directly with the owners. They were very pleasant, easy to deal with and professional. No problems.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would not hesitate to recommend Boulder Cove Cottages and hope to have a chance to go and stay longer another time.
