1bed/1bath apartment in hotel in Nurnburg, Germany WhenDecember, 2006, 1 Week LocationThe apartment was located within an apartment hotel, Hotel Maximilian, outside the old walls of the city but just a block from an underground station (U-Gostenhof). It was in a safe residential area. Nearby AmenitiesWe used the underground extensively. The nearest grocery store (and it was a supermarket) was about 2-3 blocks away -- at the next underground station. The post office and several ATMs were at the same location. We just got off the underground train a station early on our way home in the evenings to do our shopping and then walked back to the apartment/hotel. There was usually free coffee in the lobby and there was a small cafe too. There were also laundry facilities on site. The House/ApartmentThe building was your typical multi-story hotel building. It was very quiet at night. (During the early morning hours -- not so quiet as the apartment next door was undergoing some sort of remodel). Our apartment was on one of the top floors and we had a great view of the rooftops of the city. One note -- we found the photos on their website very misleading. We were shocked that the apartment we thought we were renting was so different and SO SMALL -- and I'm talking really small with a queen bed, small table/chairs, tiny kitchen all in this very, very small space. So we returned to the desk and got a larger apartment - which we did have to pay more for. This apartment had a loft bedroom, a small living room and eating area. The kitchen (in the entry hall) was like a small closet that had been converted to a kitchen, also I think it was not designed to be a kitchen -- but it had everything we needed to prepare an evening meal. The heating was strange ... in that it must have had floor heating and it stopped just past the kitchen. So parts of the apartment were warm and some weren't. GardenWe had a small deck with deck furniture, which would be lovely during the warmer months. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasIt was clean and in good repair. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe loft bedroom was fine as was the bathroom. KitchenYou wouldn't have wanted to do any significant cooking in the kitchen but it did have everything we needed. Problems or BonusesThe big surprise was the difference in what we saw on their website and what we got. The big bonus was the fabulous breakfast that was included. It was excellent. Another surprise was the Internet costs -- fairly pricey but I don't remember how much. I was only able to find one Internet cafe in Nurnbrug, so I had to use the hotel's wireless service a couple of time (you could buy it in five minute blocks). Their system is also spotty and I had to go to the lobby to get a good wireless connection. Their tech people said it was because I was using a PDA. Agency and Representatives (and price)The front desk was great. Very helpful in giving directions. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?Yes, just beware of the website photo issues and the wireless Internet issues (if you care about this). Things to do in this areaWe were in Nurnburg for the Christmas market and it was worth the trip. We couldn't have enjoyed it more. The food was wonderful and so were the people. We also went to Bamberg -- a place that should NOT be missed. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
