Review 3080: Cape Kanapitsa, Apartment
Hotel and apartments on Skiathos, Greece
August, 1 Week
Situated on the Kalamaki Peninsula of Skaithos island, on a little promontory overlooking the sea between two beaches. From our brief trip along the island, this certainly seemed to be the nicest part of the island - very green and civilised.
A good general store was five minutes walk down a fairly steep hill - they had everything one could need, including fresh bread and pastries in the morning. There were two tavernas 10 minutes walk downhill to the to the left and one 10 minutes walk downhill to the right on the other beach. The small pool bar served excellent iced coffees!
The apartment was in a small complex of apartments and suites, set amongst gardens. It was apparently renovated recently. Due to the design of the building, you never felt overlooked and it was very peaceful. We had amazing views from our terrace.
We were on the second floor (of 3) and had a huge shady terrace, running the length of the apartment, with a large table and chairs. There was also some seating in the grounds, a sun terrace and a pool with comfortable sun loungers.
Very well furnished with a large dining table (only used to play cards because we ate breakfast and lunch on the terrace and out at night) with plenty of seating. It was larger than it looks in the website. Very high standard of cleanliness.
One room with double bed and one with twins. Good quality, comfortable mattresses and good size rooms. Plenty of wardrobe space. Good individually controlled air-conditioning.
Two very nice modern marble bathrooms - one with walk in shower with good pressure and the other with bath with shower over.
Small but adequate kitchen area: stove top, refrigerator and sink. Enough, nice, plain crockery and cutlery, with plenty of pots and pans that we didn't really need.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The reception staff are very nice, with excellent English.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We would certainly recommend the apartment and the location and would happily stay here again. There was a nice mixture of nationalities (mainly Italian, Greek, English and American) in family groups or couples. The only negative point was the pool (actually two pools) - though very attractive and a lovely place to sit, with a small pool bar serving snacks and drinks, it is a seawater pool and seems to be very, very concentrated and salty. Wear goggles. The beaches either side are lovely: safe, with clear, warm water and masses of fishes to be seen, even close in.
Due to the hills, I would not recommend this to someone with mobility problems, although if you had a hire car, there are car parks at the back of the beaches. We didn't feel the need for a car, with good public and taxi transport.
Things to do in this area
The beach to the left has a good diving school (you can take taster beginner lessons) and the one to the right has all sorts of water sports. Wonderful snorkeling off Kanapitsa beach to the right.
The Kanapitsa Taverna is in a lovely, romantic position but the food is average. The food is better at Jonny's Taverna in the opposite direction, which is set in an orchard.
We caught the charming water taxi into Skiathos Town (€3) a couple of nights, which is lively (but not raucous) with a huge selection of restaurants and bars for people watching. The water taxi goes from Kanapitsa and Tzaneria beach. The road taxi back was €8. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the main road, where there is a regular bus serving the rest of the island.
