1bed/1bath apartment in Bruges, Belgium

When

May 2008, 5 nights

Location

Within the medieval center of Bruges, 4-8 minute walk to the burg and market/main square. It's on a one-way street of cobble stones.

Nearby Amenities

The apartment is close to everything.

The House/Apartment

This is a very old building that has been renovated - one of those narrow houses, one room per floor. The apartment is on the first and second floors. The sitting room with kitchen on one wall and a dining area on the first floor; the bedroom with two twin beds and bathroom with shower on the second floor. A studio apartment is on the ground floor. There is a main front door for both units, then a glass door, then either the door to the ground floor studio or stairs to the front door of the upper unit.

The apartment is very basic but is in good shape and clean. Both sets of stairs are rather narrow and need getting used to. I would not recommend this apartment to anyone with mobility problems. Also, the rafters in the bedroom are low.

Garden

No outside sitting area, no garden.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment is clean. The furniture is very basic. There is no telephone, no Internet connection, very small TV with CNN.

The sofa bed in the sitting room was very uncomfortable as a sofa - did not try it as a bed. The other chair needs repair or replaced - the right arm is very loose. There is also a dining table with four chairs between the two front windows. There is a fireplace on this floor.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bedroom maybe a problem to some - one can hit ones head on the rafters. The twin beds are okay.

The bathroom is good with an enclosed shower. Plenty of hot water and towels.

Kitchen

The kitchen has four-burner stove, small under-the-counter refrigerator, microwave, electric coffee maker, but no oven, no toaster, no place to drain the dishes which is a hassle. There are enough dishes and flatware but lacking in decent pots and pans and knives.

I would say that it would be a hassle to cook a full meal.

Problems or Bonuses

We expected a bit more comfort than what this apartment has to offer but it is clean.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked with the owners who were very responsive through the Internet. The owners live a block and a half away. We had to pick up the keys from their house and basically we were on own. We were surprised that they did not bother to show us the apartment but simply gave us directions to get there.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Honestly, we probably will not stay in this apartment again because we want more comfort than what this apartment offers. We tend to "live" in our rentals not simply sleep there.

However, if your budget is limited, with no mobility problems, and fairly independent, this apartment is fine. Also be aware that the rafters are rather low and maybe dangerous to your head!

Things to do in this area

Bruges is a beautiful medieval city. We like the Church of the Holy Blood. We like simply strolling the streets. We enjoy visiting with people we have met here.

We like Mme. Wilhems' cheeseshop on Geldmunstraat (across from Proxi grocery store), Le Qoutidien Bakery/Cafe on Philipstraat, Depla Chocolates on Marianstraat, the Wednesday market on the main square, Chronos Antique shop across from the vismarkt and many more...
