apartments in Dubrovnik, Croatia
WhenJune 2008, 3 nights LocationThe apartment is located in Dubrovnik, in the Ploce neighborhood. This is outside the old walled city, but facing the harbor. The location and views are magnificent, both day and night. From the apartment's veranda, you can see the Adriatic Ocean, with Lokrum Island in front of you and the Ploce Gate side of old Dubrovnik to the right. The dwelling is located up on a hill. Nearby AmenitiesJust a flight of steps away was a grocery store and a bakery, along with several cafes. Five minutes walking to the Old City, where restaurants abounded. The House/ApartmentThe dwelling was built by the owner's father, with the characteristic orange ceramic tile roof found throughout the region. From the street, the entrance was totally unimpressive, hidden behind a tall fence and wall. Upon entry, you came upon a central courtyard area, the common area for the three apartments available for rental by Ljiljana, who lives on the premises. GardenA magnificent stone-paved sitting area was the common area, with a long table and view of the ocean and harbor. Unparalleled beauty. There was also a stone built-in fireplace/grill. No pool. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe apartment (2bed/1bath) was spotless and furnished nicely. Everything felt clean and crisp, and reminiscent of Danish decor. Interestingly, the owner spent half of her time in Denmark, which may speak to the decorating influence. Our individual apartment had its own patio with a small table and chair, where we ate our breakfast every morning. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe beds were very comfortable, sheets clean and crisp. Extra blankets provided. Pillows were a little small. The bathroom was not modern, but was very clean and adequate. Good water pressure in the shower. KitchenThere was a complete kitchen, fully equipped with refrigerator, plates, flatware, and utensils, and table and chairs. We didn't cook, but utilized the refrigerator to store our breakfast items. I don't think you could cook elaborate meals, but certainly something simple. Problems or BonusesThis place looked even better than its website. The apartment has parking for three cars, including a one-car garage. Agency and Representatives (and price)Ljiljana was a gracious host, and tried to make everything wonderful for us. She mapped out walks, restaurants, and journeys for us. She is very personable, and tries to make you feel at home. When we arrived, she offered us some refreshments on the veranda, and we just soaked in the view and her hospitality. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?I highly recommend this accommodation, with one qualification. It is located on a high hill just outside the Ploce Gate. The hill is steep, and both going down and going up may be challenging for some people. I personally welcomed the exercise, especially after all the calories I was consuming. There are many stepped walkways, or you can just walk on the road. It's a great place to stay if you have a car, and want to take day trips. Things to do in this areaOne of the day trips we did take was to Montenegro, to the Bay of Kotor, which I highly recommend. Others have also gone to Mostar in Bosnia. When in Dubrovnik, make sure to take the Wall Walk, and when you are done, stop in the Buza Bar (marked with a sign that just says Cold Drinks). It's probably the most beautiful bar in the world!
