Review 3717: Bavarian Forest Holidays, Haus Sterr
Apartments in adjoining houses in Bayerisch Eisenstein, Germany
July / August 2008, 1 week
Situated in a picturesque border town of Bayerisch-Eisenstein on German - Czech border. The location is set within the extensive Bavarian forest national park. The forest on the Czech side of the border is also a national park. The hosts own a number of houses in close proximity, all within a short walk of the forest.
Multiple local facilities (including supermarket, restaurants and a great coffee/pastry/bakery within pleasant 5-10 minutes walk, in Bayerisch-Eisenstein. Larger food supermarkets and shopping located 15 minute drive away in Regen.
Accommodation in spacious house tastefully split into apartments. Modern facilities (including LCD wide-screen TVs and DVD players) and very comfortable. Generally, very quiet and relaxing location - surrounded by forest. The main road and railway through Bayerisch-Eisenstein are audible from the properties, but not intrusive (border road traffic not suitable for heavy lorries so was much quieter - there is also only one train per hour).
Gardens were well-stocked and looked after. Barbecues available for use by guests. One of the gardens backs onto the national park and blends into the forest - we could start our forest walks from the back garden of the property.
Comfortable in general. Very clean. No complaints.
Bedrooms and bathrooms very clean and comfortable. Beds were surprisingly comfortable. One bedroom had its own balcony which looked onto the garden and forest beyond. Bathrooms included showers (not baths) and very clean (good water pressure too!).
Kitchen included kitchen table, microwave, filter-coffee machine and kettle. Adequate cutlery, pots and pans etc. No dishwasher, but that's what teenage kids are for!
Problems or Bonuses
Generally, we were positively surprised by the quality of the accommodation, facilities, location and area. We spent a few days in the Austrian lakes before coming here, but this (although different) was no less rewarding. Proximity to Prague - only two hours by road - makes it a must-visit and easily achievable as a day trip.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Friendly (but not intrusive) English hosts who have settled in the town and who have excellent local knowledge.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Definitely - we think the property provided excellent value in a great location. We visited in summer and are planning a return in the winter.
Things to do in this area
Great local bakery / coffee-shop. Unbelievable range of local and traditional specialities - all hand-baked by the local baker. We did not find better in Salzburg or Prague. Great coffee too.
Too many possibilities to list, but this is a great location for an active family holiday - especially hiking, mountain-biking (on endless trails through the forests).
