Studio apartment in Dubrovnik, Croatia

When

May 19,20,21,22 2009, 4days and 3 nights

Location

Located near the top of many stairs decorated with plants in old town Dubrovnik closer to the walls than the Stradun and about central between gates. It was very quiet and private. I loved the charm of coming and going. The stairs required you to go slow and enjoy the many interesting homes and visit with the people a bit. I wish I were there now.

Nearby Amenities

Everything was within 5-10 minutes walk. The best gelateria in Dubrovnik(of many) was at the start of our street and the green market, restaurants and many attractions were all easily accessible. Half way from the Stradun to the Gate in the Wall at the top of our street(stairs) were several restaurants. Driving anywhere was never an option. The furthest distance we went was 10 minutes to the Old Port to eat or get a boat to Lokrum.

The House/Apartment

Yes, historical and completely rebuilt after the bombing in the 90's. Lidija and her husband have created a home for their family and three rental apartments. Most everything in our apartment was new or in excellent shape and this included a clothes washer. The stairs were quiet and everyone living full time were friendly and welcoming. We saw few other renters but did meet a few fellow travelers(Croatian and American). Ours was a ground floor studio with kitchen nook and separate bath with laundry and shower, all wonderful. Lidija provided abundant towels. There was a television, microwave and stove top.

Garden

No outside space other than the plant lined stairs and we did sit and visit with others on the stairs; it was cool and comfy(heat spell) but our apartment was very cool and we never were uncomfortable or had to use the heat and air conditioning.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Great shape, comfortable and extremely clean. Nothing lacking.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

Yes to the beds were comfortable and the bedrooms nice, and I answered about the bath in a paragraph above.

Kitchen

Very usable and plenty of everything. We cooked more than half the meals and it worked fine for full meals. There was no oven but we wouldn't have used it anyway.

Problems or Bonuses

Lots and lots of good surprises. Lidija our hostess, spoke Italian with us at our request and would fill us in with English when we needed. She is the warmest most giving owner with information about what travelers need to know and then she would at our request schedule to visit and take time to tell us her stories and history of the house, Dubrovnik, the war, religion, politics, family history, etc. We asked lots of questions and she was joyous and responsive. Her hospitality and willingness to give of herself is awesome.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Lidija is the owner and on site person. She spoke English and Italian fluently. Everything we read beforehand was understated. The price was low compared to all else we checked and we were very impressed at the value.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Wholeheartedly would stay again and recommend to anyone to stay here. The only possible qualifications if someone were handicapped and couldn't get up and down exterior stairs even at a slow pace. The charm and ambiance and quietness makes up for any inconvenience in the climb up or down.

Things to do in this area

La Dolce Vita Gelateria was amazingly inexpensive and delicious. The Old Port and Green Market a few minutes away. Walking the walls around the old town is a must. The Center for the Restoration of Dubrovnik sobering and essential to understanding the recent devastation from the war.
