Review 4357: Huppertz Loreley Apartments, Apartment Idyll

Review by Kathryn J from OK

1bed/1bath apartment in St. Goar, Germany

Right outside our door in St. Goar, photo by

October 2009, 6 nights

The apartment was located in the small town of St. Goar right on the Rhine. The location was a three to five minute walk from the train station and when you walked out the front door of the building, the Rhine was right across the street. The ferry between St. Goarhausen was a one minute walk. The apartment was in a small alley right off the main street of St. Goar, but was very quiet. We really loved the area.

Nearby Amenities

We did not have a car for the first five days so walked and used the train or a boat to get everywhere. Restaurants and groceries (very small grocery store) were within a one to four minutes walk.

The House/Apartment

The building was in very good shape and was peaceful and quiet. The apartment house was joined to a wine/Christmas store. The owner of the Christmas store helped us locate the apartment owner when we arrived. There were three other apartments in the building. I think we saw someone on the stairs once in the six days/nights we were there.

There was no private outside sitting area, but there were benches along the river right across the street. We did take advantage of sitting and watching the barges and other boats go up and down the Rhine.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in good shape, the beds were comfortable and it was very clean. There was a couch and chair in the living room and a bench in the kitchen - plenty of seating for the two of us.

My only complaint about the bedroom was that the lighting was very dim. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of space (and hangers) in the wardrobe and chest of drawers.

There was one nice sized bathroom that included a washing machine. The hot water in the bathroom was somewhat tricky. There was an individual water heater for the bathroom and it required turning the water on fairly vigorously before it would actually heat the water. There was a shower (good sized) but no tub and the WC was separate from the rest of the bathroom.

The kitchen was quite usable. I only cooked breakfast and one evening meal, so didn't cook a lot. But there was a full range with oven, plenty of small appliances (microwave, coffee pot, toaster, water kettle). There were enough dishes and glasses. The counter space was quite limited as I have found in other apartment rentals.

Problems or Bonuses

I was pleasantly surprised by the location even though the website explained it. I couldn't really grasp how handy everything would be.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

I was treated well by Walter who is the owner and was on site. He spoke enough English to communicate effectively. The website accurately reflected the apartment. We did have a problem when we arrived. Walter had emailed that he would meet us at the train station and I had given him our arrival time. He misunderstood and was not there to meet us. We were able to find the apartment easily by the description on the website and the owner of the Christmas store called Walter for us. I found out after making the reservation that these apartments are used by Untours and Walter apparently thought the Untours people would be contacting him about our arrival.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would stay here again if I wanted to stay in the Middle Rhine area again. It is definitely not a fancy place, but was convenient, clean and met our needs quite well.

The one qualification is that the apartment we rented was advertised on the website as a ground floor apartment when in actuality it was up a short flight of stairs. This didn't create a big problem, but might if someone was really unable to climb any stairs at all.

Things to do in this area

We did day trips to lots of the towns along the middle Rhine. We visited Bacharach, Boppard on their wine festival day, did a cruise on the Rhine, visited Rhinefels castle and Burg Eltz, rode the train the Cologne and drove the Mosel one day.

Our favorite restaurant was in the Hotel am Markt. In fact we ate there three times in the six days we were in St. Goar. We also ate at Hotel Hauser and it was fine - just not as good as am Markt.
