1bed/1bath apartment in Amsterdam, Netherlands

When

March 2009, 5 days

Location

The apartment was outside the city center, in a great neighborhood. Close to the city by tram, yet out of the noise and bustle of being in the city center. It was only 1/2 block from tram line 10 and a short walk from line 26. I did not realize how important being close to a tram line was, until we stayed at this apartment.

Nearby Amenities

Short walk to bakery and coffee shop. Three tram stops from a grocery store - close enough we often walked it. Purchased a four day pass and was able to ride the tram everywhere.

The House/Apartment

The apartment was incredibly clean, and I am picky (I manage vacation rentals on Oahu, so know what to look for). The apartment was on the edge of the building so we only had neighbors on one side and above. Never had any problem with neighbors. Enjoyed the neighborhood, the view was great. The apartment was split in two levels. Downstairs was the sleeping area, laundry facilities, and bathroom. Upstairs was the living area, kitchen, and comfortable sleeping sofa. The divided space was well appreciated as I was traveling with my two teenage daughters and it was nice to "get away" downstairs.

Garden

There was a small private garden for sitting. Although we were far too cold to enjoy it very often. It had a locked gate to the sidewalk, so if we had rented bicycles, they would have been safe.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

As I said above, the apartment was very clean. The furniture was in great shape and the accommodations were perfect. It had everything we needed. Lots of fun times playing cards on the dining table, looking out at the cat walk going up to the third floor apartment across the way.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bed and couch bed were both comfortable. The bedroom was nothing fancy, but a pleasant place to stay. One bathroom was enough for the three of us - it was divided in to two rooms, a shower room and a toilet room. Both rooms were tiny, but functional and clean.

Kitchen

The kitchen had everything we needed. A small fridge, cook top, and microwave. Can't remember now if there was an oven. Enough pots and pans, oils, spices, and everything was clean and in great shape.

Problems or Bonuses

Surprises

Good - There was a soccer/football match during our stay. The owner was kind enough to go out of her way to purchase tickets for us. It was one of the highlights of our stay.

Bad - My debit card quit working on arrival. We went two days before it was fixed. No cash, strange city and yet... we felt safe. The apartment was everything we needed, we just went with the flow and everything worked out.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Booked directly with the owner and she was a treat to deal with. Her English was less than perfect, but we communicated all that was needed. The place was actually better than I expected.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Honestly I recommend this place highly. The owner was great, the apartment as advertised - and then some. When I go back to Amsterdam, I will book my trip around availability of this apartment. If you need to be in the middle of everything, this isn't the place for you. But for me, the 10 minute tram ride was worth a quiet, clean place to stay. Plus no narrow stairs to have to deal with luggage.

Things to do in this area

A close tram ride to everything in Amsterdam.
