2bed/1bath apartment in Bruges, Belgium WhenSeptember 2000, 1 week LocationThis apartment is in the heart of Bruges (Brugge), about a 5-minute walk from the Market Square. The street where it's located is nondescript-looking but peaceful and quiet. Nearby AmenitiesEverything in the town is within walking distance, and a car is really unnecessary, even for trips to nearby cities, since the train service is outstanding. The House/ApartmentThere are 3 apartments in the building, which has its origins in the 14th century, but has been thoroughly modernised. We stayed in the "first-floor" apartment (what we call the second floor in the U.S.). The apartment on the floor above ours, with 4bed/2bath, is the best of the three, really nicely done. GardenThere is no outside sitting area or pool -- that's not why you go to Bruges. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe apartment is spotlessly clean and comfortable, with more than enough seating in the living and dining areas. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe bedrooms are a bit dark but decent-sized, and the beds have good mattresses. The bath is thoroughly modern and large, with 2 basins, a good tub/shower combo, and a separate toilet area. KitchenThe kitchen is small and antiseptic-looking (sort of out-of-character with the rest of the apartment) but adequate for cooking full meals. Problems or BonusesThe exterior surroundings (the facades of the surrounding apartments) are a bit more worn than we expected -- not exactly elegant like much of Bruges, but certainly not a problem. Agency and Representatives (and price)We booked directly with the owner, who lives next door and is absolutely terrific -- also speaks good English. He actually took us to the train station the day we were leaving instead of our having to catch a cab. The web site gives an accurate reflection of the apartment. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?Yes, I'd stay here again. The best features of the apartment are the living/dining areas, which are spacious, tastefully furnished and very comfortable, and the large bath. Things to do in this areaBruges is a lovely town to spend days just walking around, and it has several good museums. It's also a good central location from which to visit Ghent and Antwerp via train. We had excellent dinners at De Stove and De Witte Poorte. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
