Review 4801: Thalpos Holidays, Kanaris Pool Cottage
2bed/2bath house on Skopelos Island, Greece
Sept. 2010, 10 days
If you've ever seen the popular film "Mamma Mia!" you've seen Skopelos, as it was filmed there. It is a beautiful island, and we loved it there. September was a lovely time to be there. I'll limit my review however to the house we rented for 10 days, called Kanaris Pool Cottage.
My husband and I have debated whether to give this house a thumbs up or a thumbs down. It was both gloriously wonderful and also below standard. Let's start with the glorious...
The view was perhaps the most beautiful view we've ever had, anywhere, in any rental. We were up high overlooking blue blue sea, mountains, and neighboring Alonissos, with boats coming and going below. There was a great balcony off our bedroom for this view. It was very compelling and we never tired of it. It was better than pictured online.
The outdoor areas were good sized, welcoming and comfortable - again, with the view. The pool was large enough and very clean. It was very nice, with good furniture.
The two bedrooms were large and pleasantly attractive, with some nice antiques, and the two bathrooms were fine. Three traditional fireplaces, though not functional, added charm.
The gardens around the house were lush and interesting, with a great variety of trees and shrubs. From the road, the house was gaspingly cool to look at - large and very white. It was an old structure - renovated and expanded with an addition. (It was much smaller on the inside than it appeared).
The house is very well located for rewarding trips into Skopelos town and close to a few beaches. All in all, this is a great location, a neighborhood that I'd choose again.
Now the questionable/problematic...
We are not picky about beds. But these beds were hard as rocks. I woke up feeling bruised.
The downstairs living area did not have comfortable furniture, and what it did have was tired looking. The house was clean, but it didn't seem fresh. There was little space for seating. The television was difficult to operate, with several boxes, and no directions.
The driveway was challenging, as was the drive up there, roughly seven minutes from Skopelos town. My husband is a very capable driver and not easily intimidated - for him it was fine. For less than confident drivers, this might be a problem.
The kitchen was okay - neither a plus nor a minus. It was small but had what we needed.
The very closest beach, Glifoneri, two kilometers away, is not appealing. (But on the plus side, the others are wonderful, and none of them are far if you have a car. Our favorite was across the island, four or five kilometers away)
We rented through SunIsle Holidays in the UK. Last week (mid October 2010) they went out of business, but they were around for our stay in Greece last month. The cottage is still offered through Thalpos, a local agency. We consulted with Thalpos (the local rep for SunIsle) a few times while we were there, and they offered some support and will answer questions. They were pleasant, but minimal.
