Review 4894: Berlin Habitat Apartments, Suite Sepia
Studio apartment in Berlin, Germany
November 28 - December 4, 2010, 1 Week
I rented the Sepia Suite (Studio Apartment) from the Berlin Habitat Parkview Apartments located in the District of Mitte. It is in a great location within close walking distance to the Rosenthaler Platz U-Bahn Station (U-8) and Metro line stops. There are nearby stores/cafes/restaurants within a close walking distance from the apartment. Although I used ATMs at Alexanderplatz, according to the apartment representative there is a nearby ATM machine and in the apartment there is a sheet posted listing where we can find the closest ATM and Laundry Facility.
The apartment is on the fifth floor, but there is a lift (elevator). Although the apartment is in a large building with other units I found it very quiet. I did not hear very much street noise and I hardly heard my neighbors. The one apartment next to me was empty, so it was especially quiet.
There is a nearby grocery/drug store located only a five minute walk down the hill from the apartment. And further down the street on Brunnenstraße, which is down the street from the apartment, there are several cafes and restaurants to eat at. It is also only two stops away from Alexanderplatz where you will find more shops and places to eat.
The studio/apartment is located on the fifth floor of the Parkview Apartments. It is a modern building and is located in a quiet and family oriented neighborhood. My apartment is called the Parkview Suite Sepia Apartment and there are four other units on my floor. The entrance to the building is locked and you are given a key to enter this secure door. There is also a convenient lift. The exterior, the entrance and stairways to the apartment building are kept very clean. There is a room on the first floor where the trash and recycle bins are located that can also be accessed with the same key to the building entrance and the apartment. It is very convenient to have just one key for everything. The apartment is well insulated and I hardly heard my neighbors to the side or above me. And although the apartment is next to a park I found it very quiet at night. The apartment has big glass windows so it is very bright and cheery and they also have window shades for privacy.
There is a small private balcony with two chairs and a table and with good weather it would be great for sitting outside and enjoying the view and the park activities below. I was there in late November early December so it was too cold for me to use the balcony, but I sat at the dining table beside the large glass balcony window and enjoyed the view while sipping my morning coffee and blogging on my laptop. From the balcony I had a fabulous view of the beautiful Weinsbergspark below where walkers/joggers and families with children go to play. From the balcony you also have a great view of the Fernsehturm (TV Tower) located in Alexanderplatz. With free Wi-Fi included it was very convenient. Prior to staying in this apartment it never occurred to me to look for an apartment with a great view and balcony as I always believed that I would never have the time to enjoy it due to my sightseeing, however, my experience in this apartment has changed my view and put finding an apartment with a view and hopefully a balcony on my radar. I found the experience very relaxing and enjoyable.
The apartment had a modern and basic decor and was clean and in good condition. This is a studio/apartment so there is no separate bedroom. I thought the furnishings were more than adequate for a single or double occupant. The appliances are in good condition and very clean. The photos on the website accurately depicts how the furnishings are. There is no washing machine. For a week's stay, I didn't find that I really needed a washing machine in the apartment. If I were to stay longer than a week I am told by the apartment representative that there is a nearby laundromat.
The bed is a queen size and I found it very comfortable. The bedding was clean and also very comfortable. There is one bathroom with a full bathtub and a shower handle. I thought the bathroom was especially clean. They provided two sets of towels.
Although I did not cook in the apartment I noticed that it looked like a well equipped kitchen. There were pots, pans, ample dishes and utensils. There is a stove, refrigerator and a drip coffee maker. I even noticed a few essential spices and coffee grounds and filter in the cabinet. The kitchen was in good shape and very clean and if I did cook I would find it a usable kitchen.
Problems or Bonuses
There is a nice flat screen TV (with CNN) and a music box. There were a few helpful books available on the bookshelf on Berlin. Although there is a park and a children's playground below, the noise level was very minimal. At night it was very quiet and I had no problems sleeping. I actually loved having the park below because I enjoyed watching the people play in the park. When it snowed the last three days of my stay it was fun watching the neighborhood families go sledding.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The contact person, Stefan, for Berlin Habitat Parkview Apartments was so easy to correspond with. He was very prompt in responding to my first inquiry and to my e-mail to him from Amsterdam to schedule a time for me to check in. On the day before my departure he e-mailed me to offer to reserve a taxi for me (since my flight was an early flight). Stefan was also very thorough in showing me how things worked in the apartment and providing me with a map and pointing out the nearby necessities like ATM, Laundry, Stores and restaurants. He gave me a map and drew on there where to catch the U-Bahn and what ticket to purchase. He was very nice, professional and very responsive. Luckily, I never experienced any problems during my stay and did not have to call upon him for assistance but it was comforting knowing that he was close by and available.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
If I were to return to Berlin again in the future I would stay here again and I would also recommend it to others.
Things to do in this area
The apartment is within close walking distance to public transportation (U-8 Rosenthaler U-Bahn station) and also to nearby shops and restaurants. With good weather, you could even walk to Alexanderplatz from the apartment. And from Alexanderplatz you can catch connecting U & S-Bahn trains to other parts of Berlin for your sightseeing needs.
There is a small hole in the wall, but very nice family owned Thai restaurant called Thai Ha (Brunnenstraße 4), located down the hill just after you pass the Rosenthaler Platz U-Bahn Station entrance. I enjoyed a couple of dinners here. Further down the street on Brunnenstraße 4 and where the other entrances to the Rosenthaler Platz U-Bahn Station are located, there is a nice place to get sandwiches and breakfast croissants called Back Factory and directly across from it is restaurant which made pretty descent pizza using a wood burning oven. I ate there twice.
