Room with bath, no kitchen in Berlin, Germany WhenMay 2011, 8 days LocationThe apartment is in Mitte, the former East. It was a Jewish area pre-war, now an art gallery district. Museum Island is two blocks away, and there are good public transportation connections to the whole city. On one side, Grosse Hamburger Strasse is peaceful, with several coffee bars; on the other, Oranienburger Strasse is active, with restaurants. It should be noted that that street has legal streetwalkers at night; from what I could tell, "civilian" women could walk alone there without being bothered. Nearby AmenitiesThere were plenty. I had a coffee-roll breakfast at a different place each morning. There is a small self-service grocery around the corner. The House/ApartmentIt had a historical look; I don't know how much was rebuilt post-war and -Wall. Entering the building through a courtyard, the room was accessed through a back stairway, with a locked door, which appeared to be for my use alone. The room has a door (never used) to the owners' apartment. Note from SlowTrav: Technically, we consider this to not be a vacation rental because it does not contain a kitchen. However, since it is only a room with no amenities of a hotel, we left it in our vacation rental review section. GardenThere was a viewable park from the window; I don't know about access to it. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasBasically it was a room good for one person. There were the small low tables viewable on the site for putting a laptop. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe bed was comfortable for me after full days, and there was no problem with noise. In the bathroom, the shower was somewhat raised, so people could find it an uncomfortably big step to get out of it. KitchenNo kitchen. There was coffee-making equipment in the room, but I preferred to go out for it. Problems or BonusesI hadn't really understood that there was no kitchen, but I wasn't planning to make much use of one. Agency and Representatives (and price)It was a great deal, amounting to under €40 a night, plus agency commission. The agency took the initial deposit by credit card, with the balance payable in cash on arrival. The owners are a nice young English-speaking couple; the wife was there to check me in, and I happened to see the husband later. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?I found it to be a very good deal and location. It's fine if one is aware that there's no kitchen; at least a refrigerator would have been nice. Things to do in this areaAmong several restaurants in the area, I'll highlight Sophieneck on Grosse Hamburger Strasse for full German dishes.
