2bed/2bath apartment in Amsterdam, Netherlands WhenJuly 8-15 2011, 1 week ReviewOn January 27, 2011, I began to search for an apartment in Amsterdam for a week in July. Several possibilities emerged but we chose this apartment, partly because of the excellent location, but it stood out from the others in three areas. It listed an elevator, three bathrooms, and suitability for the elderly. I also told the agent in an e-mail that we were two couples in their 70’s and 80’s. Upon arrival we were met with no elevator, a split second bathroom (toilet down seven steps), and narrow, dark, twisting steps up two flights. We now refer to these as a vertical tunnel! There are 37 steps to the first level of the apartment and 13 up to the upper bedroom. There are seven to the bedroom on the main level and the toilet is down those steps. Without Angelo, the keeper of the keys, we could not have gotten the luggage up the steps. Angelo was great and made all the difference. When I called the agent to complain about this misrepresentation I was told that the website did not say this. However I have a printout that I made at the time of the booking which does indeed mention these things. Granted that the information has been changed. As of this date, no one has done anything to assuage our irritation and disappointment at this erroneous information. Now, once we got ourselves installed in the apartment it was comfortable. The beds are good, the large bathroom on the top floor is nice, the kitchen works. The wireless internet worked most of the time. I did try to not think about the possibility of fire but I was not aware of smoke alarms. This apartment is in a great location, a real neighborhood feel with the bakery on the corner and restaurants all around. It is just a block from the Anne Frank House. We left in the morning and usually did not return until after dinner. That way we only had to deal with the stairs once a day. So, do not consider this apartment unless you are agile and very mobile and have small pieces of luggage. You can view the property directly: Princenstraat 5.
