Review 5421: Mission Beach Shores, Apartment

Review by Fletch from Australia who is a SlowTrav Contributor

Large studio villa in Mission Beach, Australia

July 2012, 5 nights

A small studio villa opposite the beach in a small country beachside village.

Even though there are four studio villas on the large block they are sited with space and tropical gardens between so it seems very private. We had a villa at the back (there are two on either side of the block) with a lovely path through the tropical garden so was even more private.

There are houses on both sides and at the back but we only heard a dog bark once and no other noise.

Mission Beach Shores is opposite the beautiful beach with only a quiet road between.

Nearby Amenities

There were several cafes/restaurants within walking distance and a new large supermarket and a hotel a few minutes by car.

The main village is a five minute drive away or a longer bike ride along a bike path. There are all amenities of a small village and more restaurants and cafes.

The House/Apartment

The studio is quite large with a good sized bathroom off it.

The decor made the room feel very relaxed and peaceful. The website doesn't do the room justice. When we were shown in it looked beautiful and I always felt happy walking into it when we had been out.

We didn't need an air conditioner while we were there but think there was one in the room.

The laundry was shared and coin operated.

There is an undercover sitting area just at the front door with bamboo blinds that you could leave down or up to let in more sun. We were there in winter and although it was very much warmer than where we live we still needed to let the sun in. In warmer months the blinds would help with the heat and there was an overhead fan also. It is very private.

There was a table and three chairs where we spent most of our time reading or using the computer. The WiFi was free but we really only had good reception outside.

There was also a small area with two chaise lounges and a small electric BBQ.

There is a lovely pool at the front of the area with chaise lounges at different places to be in or out of the sun.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

All the furniture and decor were in good shape. There was a sofa as well as the bed in the room.

We had visitors for lunch and there were four chairs we could use. It was warm so we could all sit outside around the table.

The bathroom has a toilet, basin and large walk in shower. Water pressure was great. It had a nice feel to it. The full length window had shutters that could be opened to make it feel a little like the room was outside.

The king bed was very comfortable and the linen was very good. The towels were large and fluffy.

We used the kitchen - a unit along the wall with a servery to the outside BBQ. There was no oven but an electric fry pan was supplied.

The crockery, cutlery and glassed were good quality.

The were enough pots and pans for our needs although we didn't cook there except for the Sunday lunch (a Thai BBQ). If you wanted to cook elaborate meals it probably would not be enough.

Problems or Bonuses

Walking in to the welcoming villa was a surprise as the website doesn't show it off as well as it is.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

I rang to book and the lady manager was very helpful. She greeted us and showed us around when we arrived.

We paid AUD$140/night in July, which is the high season in Tropical Queensland.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would be more than happy to recommend Mission Beach Shores to friends and would stay there again happily. If we were staying for several weeks we would prefer somewhere with a larger kitchen but the feel of the place makes up for it and we would make do with the BBQ.

It was a little cold for us to swim in the sea at that time of year although the temperatures during the day were in the low 20s(Celcius) but it is very safe, being sheltered by the islands.

During the summer months it is dangerous to swim in the sea due to box jelly fish or stingers that can cause harm. There are signs up along the beach. You can still go for long walks along the beach and when there is a full moon people have fires on the beach.

Things to do in this area

There was a basic Thai restaurant within walking distance and a steak place a few doors from that. Our only meal out was the Thai as my sister lives there and she cooked for us.

The beach is beautiful and overlooks Dunk Island which was a well known Island resort until cyclone Yasi devastated the area. Mission Beach is getting back on its feet and is once again a lovely tropical beach resort town. If you want a quiet holiday on a beautiful beach this is the place for you.
