Review 5487: Ferienwohnung Ellen Raith, Wohnung 2

Review by Peter Lake from Canada

1bed/1bath apartment in Fussen, Germany

October 2012, 2 weeks

The apartment, Wohnung 2 on the website, is located in the newer part of town, on the top floor of the owner's home. There are other homes close by but it is a very quiet residential area. We have visited the Bavarian Alps before. We found Fussen to be more atmospheric and preferred the gentler terrain of the Algauu region as opposed to the areas a little further east and south. Not only a great location for the famous castles, there are lots of other nice places to visit within a short drive.

Nearby Amenities

It is a 15 minute flat walk to the edge of the altstadt (old town). Here there are numerous restaurants and shops. We always drove to our 'local' food store, mainly because I was given a free upgrade by Sixt to a nice BMW and I wanted to show off but soon realized that BMWs and Mercedes were quite common in this neck of the woods. Walking to the local food store would take about 15 minutes.

The House/Apartment

The apartment is located in a newer residential area but within easy walking distance of the old town. The owners and another tenant share the building but there was no discernible noise from either. The apartment is very private and everything was in good repair.

There is a balcony off the living room. At the time of our October visit there were petunias still in full bloom and the weather was very nice. Neuschwanstein Castle is visible in the distance. The home is surrounded by newer housing but it is a pleasant and quiet area nonetheless.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Everything was fine and dandy. Spotless. I felt guilty when I stained my own shirt with wine.

One large bedroom, comfortable bed, lots of space for clothes. The bathroom was also large, with two sinks and a washing machine.

There were enough pots, pans and dishes to provide for a good meal for the two of us. Our preference for an apartment is usually for the space it provides as opposed to the cooking opportunities, though we do arrange light meals three or four times a week. Everything was very clean upon arrival.

Problems or Bonuses

The most pleasant surprise, the hosts Ellen and Wolfgang. But not so much a surprise after spending a little time with them. As Bain would say in a Batman movie: "That's a lovely, lovely couple." Could not have asked for nicer people to deal and converse with. This is the only the second time my wife and I have spent a social evening with hosts, and the tavern they took us to was perfect.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We paid around 65 per night for our stay, including the 'Konigscard'. Ellen and Wolfgang both speak English very well. They are kindhearted, humorous and helpful.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would stay here anytime if in the area. My best friend would have to stay in a hotel if visiting Fussen at the same time as myself. Love the town, especially love the hosts.

Things to do in this area

Kempten, Ettal, Wies Church, Mittenwald plus trails, Oberammergau, Garmisch plus trails, Ettal, Zugspitze, Munich, Lindau, Kings Castles, Fussen itself, local walks. Great baby liver at the Croation (?)restaurant close to St Mang monastery.
