Spring 2000 - England and Italy

Pauline and Steve from NM, May and June, 2000. One month in England, one month in Italy.

On April 26 2000 we left for 3 1/2 weeks in England. We stayed in a cottage on the south-western edge of the Cotswolds (Plough Cottage on Well Farm, near Painswick, booked through Rural Retreats). We extended the trip for another week in England and then went to Italy for a month.

This section includes our journal and pages of photos from the both portions of that wonderful trip.

One Month in England

England

We had not been back to England since our big Europe trip in 1988-89 when we spent five months traveling all over England, staying in vacation rentals one week at a time in different areas.

Italy

From England we flew to Rome to spend 4 1/2 weeks in Italy. While we were on this trip we posted some pictures and our journal on the web site. Some of the information from the pages of pictures has been incorporated into other places on the web site, but I am also leaving it here in case anyone wants to look at it.

Itinerary

Trip to England and Italy, April 26 - June 27, 2000

This trip was originally to be 3 1/2 weeks in England, but was extended during the trip to stay in England for an extra week and then go to Italy for 4 1/2 weeks.

FLIGHT: Wednesday, April 26, Albuquerque to London
Leave Albuquerque at 1:15pm, arrive London Gatwick at 8am next day.

AIRPORT PICKUP: Thursday, April 27, 8am

CAR: Thursday, April 27, pickup Stroud 11:00am
Five Valley Vehicle Hire

HOUSE: April 27 - May 20, Painswick, Gloucestershire, England
Plough Cottage, 24 nights, booked through Rural Retreats. Extended to stay until Thursday, May 25.

CAR: May 26, return car Stroud the night before we leave.

AIRPORT DROPOFF: May 27
From cottage to Heathrow.

FLIGHT: Saturday, May 27, London (LHR) to Rome, Italy
Leave London at 10:50am. Arrive Rome at 2:10pm.

Trip to Italy, May 27 - June 27, 2000

FLIGHT: Saturday, May 27, London (LHR) to Rome, Italy
Leave London at 10:50am. Arrive Rome at 2:10pm.

CAR: May 27, pickup Rome airport, Europecar

HOUSE: May 27 - June 10, 2 weeks in Podere Bellevista in southern Tuscany. The house is at the edge of the village Celle sul Rigo. Booked through TuscanHouse.

HOUSE: June 10 - 17, 1 week in Casa Clavie in southern Liguria, near Lerici on the Bay of Poets, in the village of Trebiano. Booked through Invitation to Tuscany.

HOUSE: June 17 - 24, 1 week in Casa Grazie on Monte Argentario. This is a holiday apartment very close to the hotel we usually stay in here. It has a salt water swimming pool and access to the Mediterranean for swimming. Booked through Invitation to Tuscany.

CAR: Return car to Rome airport, taxi into Rome.

HOTEL: Rome, 3 nights in Albergo del Sole al Pantheon.
I am thrilled that we were able to book this hotel. When tried for it last year, it was full. This is a small hotel on the Pantheon piazza where Simone de Beauvoir and Sartre used to stay! Beautiful old building, renovated a couple of years ago, expensive, but a great location.

FLIGHT: Tuesday, June 27, Rome to Albuquerque
Leave Rome at 12:30pm, arrive Albuquerque 9:44pm (change planes in NYC and Dallas - an extra plane change, but we got first class upgrades!)
