Shopping carts for the supermarkets are kept outside and are locked together. You have to give the cart a coin deposit to use it.
Here is a row of shopping carts all chained together out in the parking lot. To release the cart, put the coin in the slot and press it in. This one is designed to take a 1 Euro coin.
Why such a complicated mechanism for locking the shopping carts? To make you return the cart to the right place (to get your money back). We took these photos on our Fall 2001 trip to show you exactly how it works.
