Youth hostal ! We thought that meant bring your own sleeping bag. It turned out to be better than most hotels.

No stars. 18 to 24 euros per head with bath AND breakfast. 3 euro towel rental.

Price varies by age: students charged 18 euros, adults 22 euros. Weekends/holidays a few euros more.

This was the most interesting of our lodgings and the best price per value. Walking around Jaen, we saw this building but the name brought on the idea - false - of needing your own sleeping bag - good thing we inquired within.

The impressive building retains its facade of the 15th century Hospital de San Juan de Dios, which was completely renovated inside to become an albergue juvenil (youth hostal).

At least at this time of the year, instead of teenage backpackers, our fellow lodgers were families and others of a "certain age", uhh, like us. The hostal just opened last year and still shows its newness. The ground floor holds reception, a rock garden patio with a dry stream bed, and a huge indoor swimming pool, which is also used by the Jaen version of Red Cross. A baby class was in progress the day we walked in. There is an elevator.

The rooms can be for 2, 3 or 4 people. Furnishings are sparse but the single beds are comfortable. The spaciousness and lack of stuff was refreshing. Our huge window, with light blocking drapes, looked down on the interior courtyard and was very quiet.

The very modern ensuite bathrooms were also huge and designed for wheelchair access to the roll in shower area and to pull up under the sink. There were several grab bars distributed around the walls - but the beautiful tile work dispelled any institutional look.

The breakfast buffet was serve-yourself, all you wanted of bread, olive oil, tomatoes, juice, yogurt, fruits and cafe in carafes.

I highly recommend this old city center albergue for exploring Jaen and just resting.
