This small, two-story hotel, ten steps from the River Daro and an expansive view of the Alhambra on the hill, is delightful and full of charm. At one point in its history, it housed several families in its separate rooms. The current beautifully furnished reading room was where the animals were kept. (They would wander in and out of the central downstairs “living room.”) The old water fountain is still in place in the middle of that same open area, and sunlight and heat are dampened by pulling close a canvas “ceiling” that covers the main atrium. Our room and bath were small but adequate (my husband and I are very tall, and we certainly managed well), and we had the bonus of having attached to our room a small room that used to connect both the current and next door buildings. This hotel, our second, wonderful recommendation from www.anamazinghotel.com, is a real find. After struggling with my rusty and meager Spanish during the first few days of our trip, finding Ana, the English-speaking concierge, at the hotel was a huge mental/verbal relief. She was just delightful, shared much about the city, made good restaurant recommendations, and served us wine, coffee, and cookies outside on the patio whenever we so much as blinked. Breakfast, which was served communally at the large table in the atrium, was just perfect. Ana proudly showed us the building’s lovely “bodega,” the actual kitchen for the house that had just recently been restored. The only possible down-side to the hotel is the lack of “sound privacy,” meaning that because the rooms all open onto a central atrium area and you have the option of closing your room’s door with curtains rather than using the door, there isn’t a lot of night-time privacy. Not the best place for a honeymooning couple. Otherwise, a wonderful choice. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
