Wonderful small hotel (hostal) in the heart of Madrid's city center, close to the Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia museums, major plazas and great restaurants. {2 stars}

Spain has a wonderful selection of small hotels (hostals or guest houses) and this was a true find in the heart of the city center! I stayed here based on a recommendation from friends who live in Madrid and I was very pleased, especially since this was my first trip to Spain. The hostal has a 2-star rating.

Hostal Armesto's location is very central for visiting the Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia Museums, as well as easy walking distance to Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Plaza Santa Ana, and many of Madrid's major attractions. Anton Martin is the closest Metro stop. The hostal is family-run and they are very kind and accommodating.

I booked a single room (45 euros per night) and had a double bed, small desk, wardrobe, tv (Spanish only) and adorable bathroom with shower. My room faced an interior courtyard. The prices are listed on their website and for such a central location and in a lovely room, the price seemed a great deal. The entrance is also comfortable, with a seating area where my friends could wait when they came by to pick me up.

Breakfast is not provided, but around the corner there are numerous restaurants and cafes, all serving breakfast (or lunch, dinner, tapas, etc.!) I loved being able to easily return to my room after a day of sightseeing so that I could rest or freshen up before heading out for the evening.

I would not hesitate to stay there again, though I am going to book ahead because there are only 8 rooms.
