The Hotel del Cardinal in Toledo is a lovely mansion built into the old city's walls and has lovely entrance gardens and fountains. Both the bedroom and bathroom were a good size, and the bed (my husband and I are both very tall) was comfortable. I had heard about “all the steps” leading to the front door, but there are really just 39 and there are landings for tired legs and suitcases in between. Also, as I had been warned before leaving, the front desk staff doesn’t get any awards for being warm or welcoming. I think the hotel staff might feel that it gets off the hook in terms of giving directions or advice because the tourist office is just around the corner. (That, and the closeness of the escalators up the hill are a huge plus for the hotel.) We ate at the restaurant associated with the hotel once. It was a bit stuffy for our tastes and the food seemed fine but not remarkable. Last, if I were managing the hotel, I’d put comfortable chairs or lounges in the gardens so that guests could sit there, especially at the end of a tiring day walking around town. Two nights and two breakfasts (for two) came to about 272 euros with tax. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
