Old fashioned courtesy and charm alongside a wonderful location in this vibrant city. {5 star}

We booked a Celebration Package when British Midland were kindly offering a round trip from our local airport at 35 each including taxes, return. We have long wanted to see something of Spain and Madrid was a good place to start.

Our package included a "meet and greet" car from the the airport so we had no hassles at all. We were warmly welcomed by everyone we saw upon arrival in the sumptous lobby.

Our room was delightful; very large with a separate seating area and the enormous bed in a huge raised alcove. The carpet was a feature - hand made and very beautiful. The bathroom was not large but very well appointed with a deep tub and a drench shower. The whole was evocative of the early 1900's with the emphasis on comfort and restrained style.

We were most certainly very comfortable but I am still disappointed that the basket of fruit and flowers that were promised upon arrival never materialised. We did eventually get our bottle of Cava as promised and most certainly we had a complimentary or rather inclusive dinner. The latter was not a great success but when we complained we were treated to afternoon tea including champagne, in one of the stunning sitting rooms.

Breakfast was bountiful and very good, including Cava should you wish. There were croissants, pastries, juices, eggs, bacon, sausages, fruits, cereals, yoghurts, all of very high quality and most enjoyable - except for the coffee which was only okay but then I am spoilt at home!

We were very close to the Madrid Vision bus stop so that made an excellent way to get our bearings. You can buy a one or two day ticket and hop on and off as many times as you like. The two day ticket is well worth the extra few euros.

Opposite the Ritz is The Prado and a few steps further to the Thyssen-Bornemiza which is absolutely staggering !

We enjoyed a visit to The Palacio Real and to the Retiro Park which is also very close to The Ritz.

The Botanical Garden is about 5 minutes away on foot, too, but we got a taxi to visit "El Rastro", the huge Sunday market.

All in all a delightful weekend in this 5* hotel at a cost of 345 euros per room per night including return airport trips in a limo, dinner for 2 on one evening, breakfasts, a bottle of Cava, and the missing flowers and fruit!
