Wonderful base for exploring the Bierzo region of Spain {3 stars}

Dennis Switzer on the http://www.slowtalk.com forums recommended this hotel, and I am so glad he did. We loved our stay here.

The hotel is up the road from the center of town - a 10 minute walk, maybe. But it is on the Camino de Santiago, so you are walking along with pilgrims and walkers on their way to Santiago de Compostela, which is kind of cool. There is plenty of parking, a huge bar, a restaurant, and a shop on the premises. The shop has local wines from the region, all kinds of cheeses and jams and honeys, plus other kinds of gifts.

Our room had comfortable beds, air conditioning, a large and very nice bathroom, and a little balcony. We did not use the balcony because it looked out onto the parking lot and street and also got the brunt of the afternoon sun (which is why we were very happy there was air conditioning). The only thing that would have been nice was a minibar, but it certainly was not a dealbreaker.

We ate the first night at the restaurant and enjoyed it so much we went back the next two nights, too. I will write a separate review about the restaurant. I also got excellent coffees in the bar in the mornings, and the bar is open all day; you can eat something at pretty much any time of the day, which is nice in Spain. They get many pilgrims stopping for something to eat, so will serve at 6:30, even though this is definitely not the norm in Spain.

It is easy to get in, and easy to get out, to make day trips all over the region.

I cannot recommend the Moncloa highly enough. Make sure, if you visit the area, to go have a drink at the Prada de Tope winery and restaurant close by. They are part of the same family, but the Prada de Tope does not have as much of a down to earth quality to it ... but it is a fabulous place to have a drink!
