Seville: Pension Dona Trinidad

When: March 2010

Originally our second choice hotel, it sheltered us warm, dry and comfortable in the Santa Cruz barrio.

One star pension at 43 euros per night, with private bathroom.

Good, representative pictures on the Sevilla5 website.

I had resisted this place because it was described as new construction, though in keeping with the style of the barrio, so it does have an interior patio. I soon came to appreciate "new construction" in that it was very clean and had a well appointed bathroom, i.e., shower with a tight closing door and a small counter around the sink. It did not mean that we got any more or any thicker towels.

This is the place my sister zeroed in on when we abandoned our one night stand further up in Sevilla and described in a previous review (Hostal Lis 1). This one was on our short list from the Sevilla5 site and my sister had campaigned to stay here from the start, mostly because it is advertised as "non smoking".

Well, that may be the rule for the guests but I know for a fact that the owners - or their staff - smoke because I smelled and saw it. But it was just barely noted and did not bother us at all.

Since no doubles were available, we were offered a triple at the cost of a double. Great! That gave us extra square footage and we used the third bed as a staging area for our stuff. It was on the second floor, no elevator, no TV.

It is a family run business, a very nice couple and so too the staff. The keys are always turned in to them and they open the iron gated door for every leaving and coming in. It is on a very narrow pedestrian street right in the Santa Cruz barrio. That close, it was easy to return if you forgot something and to come back and take a rest between forays out into the city. There are lots of bars and restaurants close at hand.

I would very much recommend this pension for those not demanding an elevator, TV, in-house restaurant, views or luxury furnishings - none which exist here. But it does have price per value, cleanliness, location and friendly owners.
