About me: I am a solo traveler who travels mainly using public transportation and so I prefer lodgings with great central locations, with easy access to local transportation systems or within close walking distance to major sights. Must be clean, have a good atmosphere and be in an area that is safe to walk around even in the late evening. I found this hotel through a link here on Slow Travel to the Venere.com website. Location: Excellent central location. The Plaza Mayor Hotel is located approximately 25 to 30 minutes away from the airport and about 15-20 minutes from the train station which can also be reached by metro. It is located within close walking distance (or a short metro trip) to some of Madrid’s major sights such as Plaza Mayor (2 minutes), Prado Museum (12 minutes) and Puerto del Sol (2 mintues). It is a short walking distance away to the Sol Metro stop and bus stop which you can take to get around the city. There are a good number of nearby cafes/bars/restaurants including the famous Plaza Mayor where you can sit in one of their cafes and relax. There is also a bank directly across the street with a convenient ATM. This is a 200 year old building with 33 rooms. There is a little bar in the hotel where they serve breakfast (extra fee). I didn't get the breakfast because there were so many good nearby cafes for me to select from for my breakfast. There is free wi-fi internet access to all guests and there is a computer in the lobby that you can use for a fee. For the wi-fi, just ask the hotel staff for access and they will provide you with a user ID and password. I had a single room with a double bed. The room was small and basic but was clean and I was able to sleep comfortably. Although there is no minibar or hairdryer, there is a TV mounted on the wall and a nice useful in-room safe (extra fee). The bath had a full size tub and shower and was a nice size and clean. My room faced the street (first floor) and I heard some street noise as the street below led to the famous Plaza Mayor, but it was very quiet during sleeping hours. I thought there was good insulation between the rooms and I rarely heard my neighbors except for when they were coming and going. After walking up only a few steps from the reception desk, there is a lift that will take you to your room. Hotel staff/service: I thought the hotel staff were very nice and helpful with directions and responding to my questions. They also gave me tips about watching for pickpockets when I asked for directions to the Metro. I paid E65 for a single room. The hotel has a 4 (out of 5) star rating. If I were to return to Madrid again - which I probably will - I would definitely stay in this hotel again and would recommend this hotel to others.
