Great base to visit the wonderful city of Oviedo {3 stars}

I stayed here for several days when I was taking Spanish classes in Oviedo. I really wanted to stay in an apartment, but there are not too many vacation rentals in the center of Oviedo (or at least, I could not find any.) I had passed by the Room Mate hotel in Madrid, and it looked cool, so when my friend Adrian told me a friend of his was the new manager of the Room Mate Oviedo, I went ahead and booked it.

The hotel is in an excellent location - just a street or two away from the old center of town. My room was medium sized (not huge, but not a dinky single size either) with a big bed, a desk, a minibar, and a spotless bathroom. There is also a safe in the room. My room was in the back of the hotel, so it was quiet. There are rooms on the street, too, and it is a busy street (no cars, but lots of cafes and bars) so that side can get a little noisy. The bed was comfortable, and I slept very well at this hotel.

The front desk staff are very friendly and there is a bar and restaurant where you can have coffee, breakfast, lunch, and drinks. Just outside there a gazillion eating and drinking options - a couple of blocks away is the "ruta del vino" - a city block lined with wine bars and in another direction, Calle Gascona - a street lined with bars and restaurants serving food and hard cider, the official local beverage of choice. I also was able to walk from the bus station with all my luggage, but a cab back was only 3.80 euros!

Note that the hotel is on a pedestrian street, so if you have a car you need to tell the hotel so that you don't get a ticket. But I do not advise driving in Oviedo, anyway... it was painful trying to get in and out with my rental car. Beyond painful. There is a taxi stand very close to the hotel.

My single room at the Room Mate was 55 euros per night. Doubles are about 65 euros - an excellent value. I would definitely stay at this one or others in the Room Mate chain.
