Barcelona: Cal Pep

Closing day: Suday, Monday

When: 2007

Fabulous food, joyous chaos, all in the hippest corner of the hippest city of Europe. For a reasonable 45 to 50 euro per person, wine included.

Let Pep do all the ordering for you.

Last time we were surprised with the start of those luscious green peppers that Deborah photographed for Shannon. [See SlowTalk.com message board.]

We also always order baby squid - chipirones, we had to. My neighbor - a local - ordered her chipis with beans. I know, she made me taste it.

Yes, the warmly chaotic atmosphere as orchestrated by Pep in his funky psychedelic trousers is such that our counter neighbors and we were talking, pantomiming, exchanging food the whole time.

Good European dining always succeeds in making you enjoy your company as much as your food, and Cal Pep is it. About 45 to 50 euro per person, wine included.
